Around the Grounds - Finals Week 1

A great result by our teams in the first round of finals this week. Unfortunately, two teams bowed out by just about the smallest margins possible.

Well done to our youngest finals team - the Under 10 Blues, who fought on to the end to snatch a late victory. Andy's team this week plays Preston Bullants at Greythorn Park (12.30pm). And two of the team's players, Yiannis and Luke, will be heading off to see how they've fared in the YJFL Best and Fairest on 25 August - well done!

After a valiant battle, the Under 11 Browns had a heartbreaking 2 point loss to Glen Iris, bringing another great season to an end for this group under the guidance of Dean Robinson and Melita Stevens. Ray will be representing Fitzroy at the YJFL Best and Fairest.

After dominating all season, the Under 11 Blues had a minor glitch on Sunday, going down in a shock defeat. We're confident that Anthony Rush and Sharon will be able to gee the boys up to a return to form at 10.30am at Balwyn Park.

This season, we fielded two Under 11 Blue teams and between them, they have provided 3 of the top 10 in the Yarra League - William, Oliver and Jayden.

The U12 Blues are the first of the FJFC teams through to the Grand Final, so well done to Chris, Steve and all their players. Michael and Jay are off to the League Presentation night.

(Last updated 17 August 2009)

A freak goal on the siren was the only difference between the Under 13 Blue (3) team remaining in the finals and finishing the season. Congratulations to first year coach, Jon Baxter and team manager, Chris Northrop. Isaac and Himi are expected to perform strongly in their age group's best and fairest.

The Under 14 Brown team also suffered an unexpected defeat, although this team should also have the class needed to bounce back strongly at 2.30pm at Bulleen Park. David Cappellari has again been invited to the YJFL presentation night.

And in what some consider a surprisingly strong performance, our Colts S 1 team easily accounted for Bulleen Templestowe and will front up against St Mary's at Bulleen Park at 12 noon.

C ongratulations to the following players who will also attend the YJFL Best and Fairest: Bill (U10 Gold), Raph (U10 Green), Aiden (U13 Gold), Hugh (U14 Gold) and Nicholas and Sam (U15 S 3).

Good luck to all our remaining teams. Try to get down and support them next weekend.
