Round 12 Match Report

Canterbury 8 . 10 - 58

Fitzroy 3 . 7 - 25

After knocking off Canterbury at Petersen Oval last time we met it was always going to be tough to front up at Canterbury Park - the home of the Cobras - to face a team eager to avenge their loss last time around.  Even though Canterbury had a couple of their leading players out they are still a top four side and have been playing some excellent footy this season.  We had the wind in the 1st quarter and managed to kick the first two goals of the game but could not stop Canterbury scoring a major against the wind.  In the 2nd quarter they scored several goals and although we managed mulitple forays inside our 50 metre zone against the wind we hit the goal post twice and failed to score a goal for the quarter.  Had we managed to score both majors we would have put some pressure on Canterbury on the scoreboard and may even have been able to match it with them in the 2nd half of the game. As it was, they finished the game full of confidence and run.  Unfortunately, early in the final quarter we lost Jacob McCormack for the rest of the game and the season with a torn ankle ligament and Sean O'Neill's knees were too sore for him to run effectively.  With those two blokes gone it was difficult to match it with Canterbury's running midfield and strong marking key position players and they ran out 5 goal winners.  Depste the loss it was particularly pleasing to see everyone having a go - much harder at the ball than we have been as a team for the last few games and much more competitive against a top four side as a consequence.  We need to play out the season with that same attitude and make sure we finish our home and away games on a positive note.
